How Dry Heat Affects Asphalt Shingles in Utah
Learn how Utah’s dry heat and UV exposure wear down asphalt shingles, the warning signs to watch for and how to protect your roof. Book a free inspection.

3-Tab, Architectural and Luxury
Asphalt shingles are the first choice for most Utah County homeowners, thanks to their price, durability and performance in our climate.
Asphalt shingle roofing is the most common roof type in Utah. It's affordable, comes in a wide range of colors and styles, and the right shingle handles hot summers, freezing winters, UV exposure, snow loads and occasional hail.
We're certified by GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Malarkey, and we install every shingle roof to manufacturer specifications. When your current roof is worn out, a shingle roof replacement starts with a full tear-off down to the decking.

Shingle Types
Flat, single-layer shingles. The most budget-friendly option.
Thicker, laminated shingles with a dimensional look and better wind resistance than 3-tab.
Heavier shingles with a premium appearance, including shake-style designs, and extra durability.

Performance
The highest fire rating for roof coverings, which matters in wildfire-prone areas.
Class 4 is the highest impact rating. These shingles stand up better to hail, one of the leading causes of roof damage in Utah.
Reflective cool-roof shingles bounce more sunlight away, slow heat aging and help cut summer cooling bills.
Engineered for hot summers, freezing winters and the snow loads in between.
Heat Damage
Utah's sun and wide temperature swings make shingles expand and contract every day. Watch for these signs.
Granules shield the asphalt from UV rays. When they wash into the gutters, the shingle underneath starts to crack and blister.
Heat dries out the oils in the asphalt, so shingles turn brittle, curl and split. It often shows first on south-facing slopes.
Extreme dry heat can shorten a shingle roof's life well below its rated lifespan.
High attic temperatures and rising energy bills can point to worn shingles or poor ventilation.
With curling, cracking or granule loss in several areas, it's usually time to replace rather than patch.

What Utah County homeowners and builders say about A1 Roofing.
The A1 crew was honest, straightforward and easy to work with. They did a great job on my roof and were very reasonable throughout the negotiation process. We worked with other roofers and some were trying to overcharge, others weren't organized and didn't have itemized summaries of services and materials. A1 started with a competitive price and were flexible enough given our requirements to work with us to create the right package. They have a lifetime workmanship guarantee, use premium materials and got our roof done in one day! Would use them again.
“They were on time, laid out tarps to protect things and cleaned as they worked.”
James J.
“Quick to action, quality work and very communicative.”
Nathan S.
“They did the tear-off, new decking and the new roof in one day!”
Joshua D.
3-tab shingles last about 15 to 20 years and architectural shingles up to 30 years. Utah's dry heat and UV can shorten that, so watch for granule loss, curling and cracking as your roof ages.
Isolated damage can be repaired. When curling, cracking or granule loss shows up across the roof, replacement is usually the better choice.
Repairs don't stop ongoing UV and heat aging, new shingles won't match the weathered ones, and brittle underlayment or weak decking often goes unaddressed. Read more in how dry heat affects asphalt shingles.
For most Utah homes, yes. They're thicker than 3-tab shingles, resist wind better and last up to 30 years, compared with 15 to 20 for 3-tab.
It's the highest impact rating a shingle can earn. Class 4 shingles resist hail better than standard shingles, which can mean fewer storm repairs over the life of the roof.
A cool roof uses materials that reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat. Cool-roof shingles keep the roof surface cooler, which can lower summer cooling bills in Utah's climate.
